First-year (R1ST) Course Title: DIY Doctor: Self-Medication in Animals
Have you ever wondered if animals get sick? If they do, how do they get better? More importantly, why should we care? Finding ways to stay healthy (and defend themselves from parasites) is critical for animals everywhere. In this seminar, we?ll discover how and why animals develop different wellness strategies, and develop science literacy skills and wellness habits for ourselves. As we delve into nature?s clinic, we will create an interactive model of disease transmission, examine how diverse perspectives inform our science, and have a medicinal tea party! By the end of this class, you will understand why humans couldn?t live without lessons from DIY doctors. Like other first year seminars, we will also cover skills to help you thrive in your first semester and beyond at UMass Amherst.
