First-year (R1ST) Course Title: Let's Talk about Sex (Differences)
How do we define a person's sex? Why does that definition matter?
From sexual differentiation in human development to sex-changing fish, we will explore the diverse concepts of sex differences in biology and behavior. We will engage in discussions about human sex characteristics and gender and delve into transgender and gender-diverse identities across history. Our newfound knowledge will then be applied to current social and political topics surrounding gendered divisions in sports. By working in groups to synthesize class material and peer-reviewed articles, we will propose a framework that promotes equitable access for cisgender, transgender, and gender non-conforming athletes in a specific sport. We will support and encourage each other to consider the intersection of biology, psychology, and culture in the ways that we define ourselves and others.
As an instructor, I strive to develop trust and accountability with my students by using transparent communication and promoting community building. Like other First Year Seminars, we will cover skills to help you transition to college and succeed in your first semester at UMass Amherst.
