This seminar will support your transition to college and introduce you to a topic in public health and health sciences. The first six weeks will provide foundational skills for students to thrive at UMass. The last seven weeks will focus on exploring a public health and health sciences topic.

First-year (R1ST) Course subtitle: Will that make me healthy or sick? An introduction to causation in public health

Course description: This course will explore the meaning of causation in public health. Association is not causation, but do we understand what we mean by causation? Is it as simple as it sounds, and how do people determine if something causes another. Focusing on public health, and using a historical and contemporary perspective, this course is designed to help students reflect on causation, and to be critical readers and thinkers of information presented as causal, particularly in public health.
