These troubling times call for health advocacy that meets the moment with integrity, courage, and creativity. In this course, students will learn a variety of advocacy and leadership skills to support their professional development in the fields of public health; nutrition; kinesiology; speech, language, and hearing; sociology, psychology, and related fields. After outlining personal values that ignite passion for their area of interest, students will learn to effectively engage with community leaders, advocacy organizations, researchers, legislators, the press, and every-day people who need encouragement to participate in the democratic process. The most innovative solutions to the world?s challenges require our capacity to speak up for human rights, provide testimony or write opinion pieces rooted in our lived experience, author powerful policy briefs that explain research evidence and policy solutions, or express simple-to-understand facts on radio and television. Students will have an opportunity to try these techniques to magnify their impact and contribute to the common good.
