This course introduces students to inquiry, analysis, critical thinking, teamwork, and communication through career exploration. We will use David Kolb's Experiential Learning Theory to understand how cognition, experience, experimentation, and reflection influence the learning process, and Donald Super's Career Development Theory (1996) as the foundation for understanding that career development is a life-long process rather than an isolated decision. Topics will include exploration, challenging assumptions, research, and hands-on experience. We will consider career exploration through both phenomenological and contextual perspectives where students reflect on their own values, interests, and strengths and consider these attributes in others in the professional context. The course will include a hands-on project that connects students with a professional partner in the community and introduces them to the process of researching and solving a real-world professional problem.
