This two-semester course will explore the history of utopian theory and the practice of futuring, an emerging concept that employs speculative modes of representation? such as art, literature and theory?? to envision a sustainable and enlightened future. The first semester will dive into the history of utopian theory not only through its literary record, but also through art, architecture and design. Through multiple lines of investigation, students will discover both the historic lineage of classic and modern utopian manifestos, some of which have left a wake of authoritative devastation, as well as newer millennial ideologies, which are more diverse, multidisciplinary and rhizomic, sprouting from the bottom-up. In the second semester, students will design a thesis project that is based on their research interests. Thesis projects will include a written component along with a creative portfolio, which could consist of art, design, architecture, time-based media, built work, or creative writing. All students will also prepare a presentation poster in anticipation of inclusion in the Undergraduate Research Conference. Various majors welcome.
