This course will introduce you to (and hopefully get you excited about) the theory and practice of poverty law. The class begins with an exploration of poverty itself (the who, what, and why) and an introduction to the practice of poverty law. We will then do deep dives into some of the most consequential areas of poverty lawyering (housing, benefits, education), where we will learn about these movements, the law and the change that it created, and then think critically about whether these movements were successes or failures, and what we might have done differently with the benefit of hindsight. Throughout the course, special attention will be paid to the intersections of race and gender with issues of poverty.
