How should we live our lives? What should or shouldn't we do? On what basis should we decide what to do as a society? Ethics involves bringing careful reasoning to bear on difficult moral questions, questions that have a bearing on decisions we all face both as individuals and together as a society. We will begin by introducing some of the major contemporary moral theories and methods. Then, we will critically examine pressing issues in applied ethics, including (but not limited to) the alleviation of global poverty, punishment, euthanasia, factory farming, and sweatshop labor.
