This course provides an introduction to philosophical and ethical issues surrounding technology, with a focus on new and emerging technologies and their relation to and impacts on self, society, and the environment. General topics may include: What is technology and how does it evolve? What is the relationship between science and technology? How does technology affect and structure individual and social life? Specific technologies and questions discussed may include: Should we use geo-engineering to address climate change? Is it morally permissible to alter the human genome? How does the internet and social media impact our identities? Is it ever wrong to have sex with a robot or in a video game? Do the risks of advanced AI justify investing in such technology? Who is responsible for a crash involving a driverless car? The course will focus on developing students' skills in critical reasoning and analysis while investigating philosophical questions concerning technology. (Gen. Ed. SB)
