The Five College Center for World Languages is pleased to offer two scholarships to support our students’ language acquisition experiences abroad:
The Charles Mark Scholarship for the Study of Czech in the Czech Republic and Other Slavic Languages is open to all Five College students studying Czech and other Slavic languages.
The Charles Mark Scholarship for Foreign Language Study in its Target Country is open to UMass Amherst students studying any language offered through the Center.
The focus of both scholarships is on language acquisition through language and cultural immersion activities in the target country. Scholarship amounts vary by year, but are generally in the $900-$1,500 range.
Recent scholarship recipients:
- Conducted archaeological research in Romania while staying with a local host family
- Taught English in the Czech Republic
- Volunteered at an animal clinic in Thailand
- Spent a semester in Amman, Jordan, living with an Arabic-speaking roommate
These scholarships were generously endowed in 2008 by Professor Emeritus Charles Mark, a long-time supporter of the Five College Center for World Languages, its mission and its students. We are very grateful to Dr. Mark for his support. Read more about Dr. Mark in his biography.
