This course is structured around six social and professional domains in which interpreting and translation play a significant role (Healthcare, Business, Court/Police, Refugee/Asylum, Human Rights Commissions, and the Military). Students will work on understanding the institutional structures and discursive practices of these particular domains; gain relevant vocabulary; and continue to practice translating, sight translating and interpreting relevant texts.

This course is the first of a two-semester course leading to a Certificate in Translation and Interpreting Studies. Students must have a strong command of English and an emerging proficiency in at least one other language to enroll. The course introduces students to current research in translation and interpreting studies and to basic practical skills. The task of translating and interpreting texts is understood to include a social, cultural and ethical component as well as a linguistic one.

The year 2022 marks the 100th anniversary of the publication of James Joyce?s landmark Modernist novel Ulysses. A famously challenging work, Ulysses is often cited as one of the most important novels in the history of literature, even while its status as a novel is sometimes brought into question. This course will explore the many dimensions of this groundbreaking work while considering its debt as a hybrid cultural form to the ancient tradition of Homeric epic. The deep structural and thematic connections which the novel shares with Homer?s ancient epic The Odyssey deserve special scrutiny.
