American Experience

Primarily for nonmajors. Introduction to the interdisciplinary study of American culture, with a wide historical scope and attention to diverse cultural experiences in the U.S. Readings in fiction, prose, and poetry, supplemented by painting, photography, film, and material culture. Reading Poetry

An introduction to themes and forms of poetry through a reading of selected poems in English. Emphasis on such poetic techniques as word choice, imagery, and structure, and on such modes as the ballad, lyric, sonnet, ode, and dramatic monologue. (Gen.Ed. AL)
