This course will introduce students to various web-based tools for teaching and learning. Through a blend of skills-based projects and discussions, students will learn how to use online tools to create learner-, assessment-, community-, and knowledge-centered learning environments. This course aims to expose students to innovative tools for teaching 21st century students and various learning theories associated with the development and use of those tools.

Critical Pedagogy/Media Lit

This course brings the rigorous study of educational inequality together with the tools of critical media analysis to explore representations and realities of inequality in schools with a focus on race, class, ability, gender, and sexuality. Students will also develop skills to teach for critical media literacy using critical pedagogical methods.

S-Globalization & Ed Policy

Course will approach the study of the link between education and globalization from two directions: one, from a study of recent policy initiatives in education with a view toward understanding how a particular kind of globalization is being constructed through education policy; and two, from a study of the varied literature on globalization with a view toward assessing the different constructions of globalization that are possible, and the implications of each for education policy.

Intro to Educational Statistcs

This course provides an introduction to statistical reasoning with a focus on educational contexts. You will learn how to reason from uncertain empirical data (as is often the case when dealing with school/classroom data) and how to apply this general and fundamental intellectual method in the social sciences. You will also learn how to use a variety of tools (SPSS, Excel, and TI-83 Plus) to perform data analysis on personal computers and to interpret and write results sections based on the analyses. (Gen. S-Review of the Literature

In this course we will talk about what makes a good review for different purposes, how to conduct a rigorous and systematic review, how to analyze and synthesize research studies and how to write a coherent and compelling review. We will read about and talk through some of the ethical considerations involved in the process of writing and publishing a review. Another objective will be to help students prepare for the literature reviews that are part of their comprehensive exams, research proposals and dissertations.
