S-Gender and U.S. Empire

There is an old debate among historians of the United States over whether to consider the US an empire; the answer turns, basically, on how you define "empire." This course is not very interested in that question. Rather, it begins with the problem of how to collapse two very different faces of the analysis of US imperialism. One is public/boy/policy/official: the military, diplomacy, NGOs, and medicine and science. The other is private/girl/racialized/marginal: questions of gender, children, race, indigeneity, sexuality.

S-Pub Health/Private Decisions

The field of medicine is shaped by both private and public dimensions. At the individual level, we are assured of privacy through HIPAA, and decisions on our individual health cannot be made without our consent. But there are also larger public dimensions to health that impinge on our individual and collective wellness. For example, if an individual chooses not to vaccinate themselves, that impacts the larger health of the public. What are the public costs and consequences of enacting or not enacting such rules? What are our public health and social obligations vs.

ST-Fundamental Concepts/Stats

This course is an introduction to the fundamental principles of statistical science. It does not rely on detailed derivations of mathematical concepts, but does require mathematical sophistication and reasoning. It is an introduction to statistical thinking/reasoning, data management, statistical analysis, and statistical computation. Concepts in this course will be developed in greater mathematical rigor later in the statistical curriculum, including in STAT 515, 516, 525, and 535. It is intended to be the first course in statistics taken by math majors interested in statistics.

ST-Catalan Cinema

The goal of this class is to give visibility to a film production that is generally assimilated by, and shoehorned into, Spanish film production. If there is a commonsense understanding of what a national cinema is, what about a stateless national cinema? Catalan cinema is often relegated to a footnote or a compulsory chapter in books on Spanish cinema, even though Spanish cinema would be inconceivable without Catalan film production.

ST-Contemp Rad Poli Theory

This seminar is located in contemporary political theory and envisioned as a theoretical and political examination of populism. By theoretical, I refer to the concepts, definitions, and logical sequences that are part of frameworks attempting to see the uniqueness of populism. These frameworks also aim at providing an analysis of the causes that give rise to populist projects. By political, I mean an analysis and discussion of the political forces, words, rhetorical devices, and policies that are salient traits of the interaction between groups and the state.
