S- Modeling the Mind

We will learn how mathematical modeling has helped scientists explain human thought and behavior. The readings will describe how modeling works, show why it is useful, and demonstrate some ways that modeling has been successfully applied in psychology. We will explore how the logic of modeling can be applied to how you think about everyday problems. We will also code up some simple models and use them to analyze data (no previous programming experience is necessary).

S-UsingPsych&Sci/InformPubPol

This course is an introduction to how the social sciences and the science of psychology, in particular, can contribute to the public policy arena. It is designed to provide students with a foundation for understanding a variety of psychological theories, how they can and are used to influence social policy, and what the social sciences can tell us about major social policy issues.

S-Sci Studies of Consciousness

Research in Cognitive Psychology and Neuroscience is constantly revealing new facts about how we see, hear, speak, move, recognize, remember, learn, and reason. The goal of these scientific studies is to explain these mental processes thoroughly and completely. However, many people feel that there is something about our consciousness or inner mental life that can never be explained by any scientific theory, no matter how advanced. In this seminar, we will ask what consciousness is, and will assess what current science can tell us about it.
