This course presents an overview of the linguistic structure of English for the purposes of teaching English as an additional language (EAL). Participants will learn the basic elements that every language teacher should know about English grammar and pronunciation. The emphasis throughout the course will be on implications and techniques for teaching English grammar to EAL learners.

Introduction to the formal foundations of Montague Grammar.

Introduction to some basic mathematical concepts and techniques central to linguistic theory. Set theory, logic and formal systems, modern algebra, automata theory, and model theory. Applications to syntax, phonology, semantics. No prior mathematics assumed.

How does a child choose one grammar from a million possible grammars? How are grammar and thought alike and not alike. Stresses the child's use of an inborn linguistic mechanism to produce creative sentences. Acquisition of syntax and semantics from the one-word stage through complex utterances. Linguistic principles as a window to unconscious principles of mind. Recent discoveries in the area of complex syntax. Students learn to search naturalistic data and do a small experiment. Prerequisite: LINGUIST 201.
