The purpose of this course is to develop critical thinking in the study of economic theories from pre-Classical to 21st century developments in economic thought. The perspective of the course is multi-disciplinary, in line with the objectives of the integrative educational experience. Students are required to do two writing assignments that integrate prior learning into the analysis of the economic theories covered in the course and to present these projects in both poster session and PowerPoint formats.

The dissertation workshop is open to doctoral students who are at the stage of developing a dissertation prospectus. The goal of the workshop is to help students build skills and develop research practices, and to provide a collaborative forum for the purpose of putting together a dissertation prospectus. Through the course of the semester, students are expected to develop a research plan and timeline, share and comment on each other's writings and research ideas, and make significant progress on writing the prospectus.

Focusing on Calcutta (present day Kolkata) and Bombay (present day Mumbai), the two most important port cities and industrial centers of British India, this course examines how trade and industrialization shaped urban society and politics in colonial India.
