Bangla/Bengali VI is an intermediate-level course for students who have completed Bangla/Bengali I-V or the equivalent. The course is offered through the Five College Supervised Independent Language Program. The independent study format includes small group conversation sessions and an evaluation by an outside evaluator. Students studying Bangla/Bengali develop speaking and listening skills needed for study abroad in Bangladesh and to support course work in South Asian Studies.

ENGLWRIT 112 (College Writing) is a first-year college-level writing course designed to help students expand their ability to write essays for academic, civic, and personal purposes and to develop their rhetorical awareness to write effectively in new social contexts. Based on the assumption that writing is a social activity, this course requires active engagement in the writing process, including pre-writing, peer review, revision, and editing. Students write five essays. This is the only course at UMass Amherst which satisfies the General Education College Writing (CW) requirement.

This course will familiarize the student with the basic principles and techniques of programming and using Arduino microcontroller boards and integrating them with sensor and actuator circuits. Emphasis on general problem-solving skills and creativity in developing programs and circuits. This will be a project-based course; the majority of class time will be spent experimenting and building. Prior engineering experience not required, but the student should be comfortable with basic analytical thought and a beginning familiarity with simple electronics.

This course will provide instruction of, and guided practice in, the basics of the art and craft of sound design for theater. It will explore the fundamental tools and processes essential to conceptualizing and implementing both the content of a sound design and the sound system for delivery of that content. At the end of the course, students will master the assembly and operation of simple sound systems, and an ability to interpret basic sound-system documentation.

This course explores the art of contemporary theater and the power of live performance through a series of shows the students attend in person, along with theater projects they create in a group. Through engagement with both longstanding and new ways of making theater, students will gain exposure to how live theater is being made in the world today -- an exciting moment of new frontiers and forms.
