Have we entered a new Era of Social Organization: the Era of Financialization? Financialization is the increasing role of financial motives, financial markets, financial actors, and financial institutions in the operations of domestic and international economies. We could add, that financialization also increases all of these roles in the interaction with society more broadly. If we have have entered a new era of financialization: what does this mean about the way our economy works? Does it mean that the economy serves finance instead of finance serving the economy?

This course draws together theory and research from the discipline of Communication, skills and interdisciplinary understandings developed through students' various general education courses, and their own insights as students, emerging leaders, and collaborators in the Peer Advising Program. The seminar and its related activities are designed to serve two, complementary goals: 1) honing students' skills and expanding their understandings of the connections between a ?whole student? approach and undergraduates?

This course explores theoretical frameworks for understanding the technological, institutional, and cultural dimensions of global communication defined by growing media concentration and proliferation of regional and social media.

This course focuses on the concept of horror in contemporary public culture in the United States, reflecting on the nature of evil and human responsibility in the face of it. Topics for discussion include the rhetorical use of horror, the narrative creation of monstrosities, the responses to fear of the Other, the relationship between horror and terror, and the aesthetics of disturbing performances. Several weeks will be devoted to popular icons of monstrosity in order to examine the ethical and political ramifications of these metaphors lurking in contemporary culture.

The nature and several functions of film, including narrative and nonnarrative approaches to film communication. Topics include: the components of film expression (composition, movement, editing, sound, setting, and acting); designs in screen narrative; film's relationship to other arts and media; and its role as an instrument of social reflection and change.
