Prac-Res Area Progrm

A practicum course intended to provide training for students planning, initiating, and conducting programming of a Jewish cultural, social, religious, educational, and/or community service nature with and for Jewish students in their residential areas. Student programmers plan events, serve as resources, and are the catalyst for Jewish student life in their residential areas.

Anti-Semitism/Hist Perspective

Survey of antisemitism through its various stages of historical development, from ancient times to the present. Primary focus on the intellectual, religious, political, and social roots of Jew-hatred. Special attention to its impact on Jewish life and thought, and to the range of Jewish re-sponses to anti-semitism. Topics include: the Jews in Graeco-Roman society; medieval Christendom and Islam; the emergence of modern political and racial anti-semitism. (Gen.Ed. HS, DG)

Cinema of the Holocaust

Cinema today constitutes an important source of popular historical knowledge of the Holocaust. Fiction films in particular have come to occupy a central place in our understanding and memorialization of the Jewish catastrophe. Given their importance, this course will provide a cultural history of cinematic treatments of the Holocaust, trace major trends and changes in Holocaust representations, and raise questions concerning historical memory of the Holocaust in national cinemas. The main emphasis will be on narrative cinema, but several significant documentaries will also be considered.

Israel Through the Ages

Located at the junction of three continents, the Land of Israel has historically been a crossroads for conquerors, peoples, trade, and ideas, as well as a transition zone for technological innovation and new religions. This course offers a panoramic exploration of that land from pre-historic times until the founding of the State of Israel in 1948, stressing the links between the territory, its peoples, and its exiles around the world.
