Manga Anime

Japan has become a phenomenally successful exporter of pop culture. One face of this is Manga (graphic novels) and Anime (Japanese animations). This course will give students tools to understand Manga and Anime. We will investigate the role Manga and Anime play in Japan; we will track how the different industries shape narratives in different ways; we will examine ways that Manga and Anime flow from one place to another. The course is conducted entirely in English. (Gen. Ed. AT, DG)

Introduction to Japanese literature from around 1600 to present. Alternating between reading poetry and prose and viewing classics of Japanese film. Discussion of the construction of love and death during centuries of national seclusion and in the era of Western influence. Focus on changing gender relations and on the status of discriminated against minorities. Conducted in English. No prerequisites. (Gen.Ed. AL)
