Leadership and Service

This course is the second of a two-semester service-learning set of courses in the IMPACT! Residential Academic Program. In the spring seminar, students continue the reflective learning process begun during the fall seminar, examining in greater depth the role of social identity and social justice theory in the context of their community service experiences. Each student will complete 30 hours of community service over the course of the semester.

ST-PubPol,Racism, & Patriarchy

This course will offer a set of empirical and theoretical tools to grapple with how public policy has been used as an engine of inequality. We will discuss the origins of the field and various policy areas including urban policy, environmental policy, labor, criminal justice, infrastructure, and immigration (to name a few). We will also cast a critical lens on our methods as well. The goal is for students to become proficient in a broad swath of decolonial, intersectional, and critical policy studies with an emphasis on white supremacy and patriarchy.

ST- Performance Management

This course will focus on the fundamentals for designing and using a performance management framework in the public sector, specifically in the U.S. at the federal, state, local, and nonprofit levels. It will provide a working understanding of how to develop and apply "useful measures that are used" - a simple statement that is devilishly difficult to actually do, but is fundamental for every public manager to be successful.

ST-Fixing Social Media

This course examines sociotechnical problems with existing modes of social media and works towards building new, affirmative visions for social media through technical and policy means. Students will examine interventions to address problems with contemporary social media and design and develop possible interventions.

ST-Federal Budgeting Process

Understanding the budget process is important for any federal employee and anyone who works for an entity that interacts with the federal government such as; NGOs, state governments, consultancies, and the private sector. The course will integrate the subject matter interests of each student and the budget process by utilizing various federal agencies' current budgets as case studies. By exploring budget preparation, tracking, and execution, students will become fluent in general budget terminology and the fiscal year schedule.
