Black Political Thought

A reexamination of central concepts in the history of political thought - e.g. power, equality, freedom, capitalism, domination, responsibility, citizenship, empire, and revolution - from the perspective of African American political struggles. Particular attention will be paid to how political thinkers have theorized the complex and contradictory relationship between race and modern democracy. Readings draw from David Walker, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Jacobs, WEB Du Bois, Stokely Carmichael, Martin Luther King Jr., James Baldwin, Angela Davis, and Toni Morrison. (Gen. Ed. SB, DU)

International Law

Development of basic rules of public international law. Topics include sources of evidence for law, international legal personality, jurisdiction, treatment of individuals, law of treaties, law of the sea, resort to force, and peaceful settlement of disputes. Satisfies the Integrative Experience requirement for BA-PolSci majors. POLISCI 121 or equivalent strongly recommended.

US Latin American Relations

U.S. foreign policy towards Latin America, national and coordinated policies of Latin American states towards the United States, and - to a lesser degree - relationships among Latin American countries. Historical developments in U.S.-Latin American relations, key policy areas, the main institutions and groups included in policy making, the policy options available, and likely reasons for - and interests served by - particular policy choices.

Gov&Pol East Africa

Comparative analysis of the politics of change in Tanzania and Kenya. Economic dependency and underdevelopment; decolonization and liberation; ideology and practice; democratization and economic liberalization. Emphasis on interaction between domestic and external politics. Prerequisite: upper-division standing, POLISCI 111 or consent of instructor.
