This course offers a critical view of regional and social varieties of Spanish language spoken in Spain and Latin America, with specific emphasis on situations of language contact and multilingualism affecting Spanish in those areas. We will pay close attention to varieties that are not considered standard or prestigious among Spanish speakers, and how this consideration affects people's lives and self-esteem. (Gen. Ed. SB, DG)

Presentation of major trends and developments in the Spanish-speaking world. Analysis of economic, legal, and international business issues. Utilization of Spanish terminology in commercial correspondence and business. Prerequisites: SPANISH 311 or consent of instructor. Conducted in Spanish.

Students will work in translating from English into Spanish Holyoke Health?s web site while also studying the challenges and responsibilities of working as civically-engaged volunteers in an urban community health services setting.
