This course will cover a range of topics related to fear, anxiety, and anxiety disorders. We will explore the science of fear learning and the factors that influence the development of anxiety and related disorders, as well as the evidence-based assessment and treatment of anxiety disorders. There will be a special emphasis on translating research findings into clinical applications and practice.

This course will examine core issues in social and emotional development from birth through adolescence. Emphasis will be on the key concepts and theoretical approaches that guide our understanding of emotion processing and its impact on social behavior. Biological and contextual factors that influence trajectories of social and emotional development will be considered across typical and atypical populations of children.

Though reading often seems automatic and effortless, it is an extremely impressive cognitive feat. This seminar reviews what is known about how the mind accomplishes this task. Among other topics, we will address the neural systems underlying reading, the sources of individual differences in reading skill (including dyslexia), the process of learning to read, and reading in non-alphabetic writing systems (e.g., Chinese).

The course will examine human speech recognition. A special focus will be on how humans recognize the sounds and words a speaker produces from both hearing and seeing the speaker. We will examine the basic mechanisms and mental representations involved in how humans recognize speech from these two modalities. We will discuss original research articles describing empirical research and prominent theories and models of speech perception.
