This course examines representations of Berlin in contemporary literature, film, music and art projects in a historical and socio-cultural context with a focus on minorities, migrants, and exiles. Conducted in English. (Gen. Ed. AL, DG)

A broad survey of medieval German social and cultural history, music, art, architecture and literature, including The Nibelungenlied and Hildegard von Bingen. Conducted in English.

Students develop advanced language skills with focus on scientific and technical German language and culture.

Expansion of vocabulary and extensive practice in speaking and writing, grammar review as needed. Prerequisite 310 or equivalent.

This class will give you the chance to explore the German culture of the 20th and 21st centuries by reading selected prose, poems, song lyrics and newspaper articles. Our main focus will be on the current German pop/hip hop/techno culture in literature in contrast to more traditional texts of the past. Prerequisite: German 240 or 310.

This is a stand-alone independent study designed by the student and faculty sponsor that involves frequent interaction between instructor and student. Qualitative and quantitative enrichment must be evident on the proposed contract before consent is given to undertake the study.
