This course will take an historical approach to understanding the relationship between race, class and the criminal justice system. We will analyze the various ways that social inequality, as a result of race and class, mediate individual and social group experiences with crime and the legal system. We will also analyze the affect of mass incarceration on poor and marginalized communities. The main goal of the course is to situate contemporary inequalities in the criminal justice system and their impact on communities, social groups, and populations in an historical context.

This class will serve as a gateway into the discipline of sociology. It examines Latin America using a sociological lens and helps students to grasp some of the basic concepts that sociologists use to understand the social world. At the same time, it takes an interdisciplinary approach drawing on history, anthropology, political science, development and education, as well as sociology.

In this honors colloquium, in addition to the requirements of the base course, students will need to complete additional work, research, and/or writing as directed by the instructor. Students will perform analysis of some type of data related to the course, and will learn how to create an annotated bibliography or literature review. Additionally, they will display their findings in either a paper or a presentation. Students will learn more in-depth how Sociologists do their research, how to locate and identify peer-reviewed academic work, and to explore a topic of interest to them.
