Princ of Comm Health Education
This course provides the student with an understanding of major theories used to understand health problems in communities. Grounded in social and behavioral sciences, students will examine the tools and strategies used by public health educators to educate and empower people about health issues.
S- Brain and Body Clocks
Time is nature's way of making sure everything doesn't happen at once, or so the saying goes. Why can you wake up at about the same time without an alarm clock? Why do you feel so bad when you are jet-lagged? This seminar will use current research literature to explore the mechanisms by which our brains (and bodies) tell time, and what happens when they don' work correctly, from weight gain, to altered immune responses, to cognitive and behavioral problems.
S- Perception of Language
The course will examine human speech recognition. A special focus will be on how humans recognize the sounds and words a speaker produces from both hearing and seeing the speaker. We will examine the basic mechanisms and mental representations involved in how humans recognize speech from these two modalities. We will discuss original research articles describing empirical research and prominent theories and models of speech perception.
S- Sports and Exercise Psych
This seminar will cover current research exploring the effects of exercise and sports participation on many aspects of development. We will cover a range of topics including the benefits of free and organized play in childhood, the influences of competitive sports during adolescence and young adulthood, and the importance of continued activity during adulthood and later development. The basic and applied aspects of the research findings will be highlighted whenever possible.
