This is a stand-alone independent study designed by the student and faculty sponsor that involves frequent interaction between instructor and student.Qualitative and quantitative enrichment must be evident on the proposed contract before consent is given to undertake the study. Further information is available at CHC PATHS (honors.umass.edu/chc-paths/). Submission should be done during pre-registration and completed by the end of the add-drop period.

This is the required entry course for students accepted into the International Scholars Program. Its purpose is to provide students who are intending to study abroad with some of the significant concepts they will need in order to understand the international and national politics of the country where they plan to study. Prerequisite: acceptance to ISP program.
An opportunity to discuss current state, national, and global issues and events with talented faculty, distinguished community members, politicians, and influential alums. Class time will be devoted to vibrant and challenging discussions based on critical reading and analysis of newspaper articles on current issues Requirements: Reading the front page stories from the New York Times and the Boston Globe daily. Supplemental reading as needed.
