Murder

Murder is the most serious offense against the legal order and is subject to its most punitive responses. It gives meaning to law by establishing the limits of law’s authority and its capacity to tame violence.  Murder is, in addition, a persistent theme in literature and popular culture where it is used to organize narratives of heroism and corruption, good and evil, fate and irrational misfortune. Indigenous Performance

(Offered as AMST 303 and THDA 234) In this course, students will experience and learn with dancer/choreographer Emily Johnson the ideas and theories underpinning her current performance work in process, BEING FUTURE BEING, which she will be developing in a residency at UMASS Fine Arts Center.

Third-Year Arabic II

Arabic 302 expands on previously acquired foundations in Third-Year Arabic I in speaking, listening, writing, and reading, with special attention focused on learner production of Modern Standard Arabic and one Arabic dialect. Coursework includes readings and listening materials on a variety of social, historical and cultural topics related to the Arab world, practical and reflective written assignments, and discussions on essential cultural patterns. The work in this course is designed to help students solidify Upper Intermediate High/ Advanced Low proficiency in Arabic.

Conspiratorial thinking within evangelical Christianity has been much in the news over the past several years;  but this is only the latest phase of a long and broad history.  This course examines the intersection between religion and conspiracy theories from three different perspectives.  The first perspective is historical:  there is a specific history of within the West that begins with Jon Robison’

The goal of each class, through reading and discussion, is to investigate what a researchable question is in the fields of history, art history, architecture, and material culture in Europe, England, and the Americas.
