This is an introductory course in the work of acclaimed contemporary writers who visit the class to interact with students. (Gen. Ed. AL, DU)

This class is an introduction for students who want to build basic digital proficiencies and a stronger technical foundation while also remaining attentive to broader social, ethical, and political issues. Students can expect to learn how to use and analyze a variety of digital tools, programs, and platforms, including but not limited to: HTML and website customizing, interactive storytelling, visualizing research objectives, Photoshop, GIF creation and analysis, and basic programming. This class is required for the Digital Humanities and New Media Specialization in English at UMass.

In our complicated world, what will your future look like? We'll gather texts from philosophy, history, and literature to help us wonder thoughtfully about this question. We'll think collectively about each person's possible futures, and we'll think philosophically about our collective futures in the 21st century. We will also host guest speakers who reflect on what a "career" is, for them, in this world. Visiting speakers will be asked in advance to integrate some history, philosophy, or literature into their reflections, modeling the process for your coursework.
