Study of oral and written literature by American Indian authors, with emphasis on the implications of region, tribal affiliation, and historical context. Authors, time period, and genre will vary.

This course will involve both reading and writing in the genre of creative nonfiction, which may include personal essays, lyrical essays, environmental literature, literary journalism, travel writing, and memoir.

In this course students will read and write a variety of literary non-fiction forms, including memoir, documentary essays, and profiles. Texts will include works by Joan Didion, Bill Bryson, Jonathan Ames, Helene Cooper, George Orwell, and others. Students will also be encouraged to try other forms of non-fiction, including travel writing, interviews, editorials, reviews, and/or innovative approaches to feature writing.

Analysis of problems of form, elements of genre, style and development of themes of stories and poems, written by class members and in class texts. Lecture, discussion, 5 poems, 2 stories, 2 essays. (Gen. Ed. AL)
