Adv Intro Physics

This course is designed for incoming students who have significant prior calculus-based experience with the topics covered in PHY 117 (Newtonian mechanics) and 118 (electricity and magnetism), but who nevertheless would benefit from a course in introductory physics at the college level. Students will develop their problem-solving, experimental-design, data-analysis, scientific- computing, and communication skills on a variety of more advanced applications of the standard introductory physics topics related to mechanics and E& M.

Introductory Physics II

Electricity and magnetism, with a focus on the representation of force and energy in terms of local gravitational, electric, and magnetic fields and fluxes (Gauss’ law). Oscillatory motion and waves. Applications include: electric and magnetic shielding; energy transfer via electric circuits, motors, generators, and transformers;  the creation and propagation of mechanical and electromagnetic (light) waves.

Introductory Physics II

Simple harmonic motion, fluids, electricity and magnetisms. Lab experiments are integrated into the in-class lectures, discussions and problem solving activities. Three extended-length classes/week plus a discussion section. Satisfies medical school and engineering requirements for an introductory physics II course with labs. Prerequisite: PHY 117. Enrollment limited to 28.

The concepts and relations (force, energy and momentum) describing physical interactions and the changes in motion they produce, along with applications to the physical and life sciences. Lab experiments, lectures and problem-solving activities are interwoven into each class. Discussion sections offer additional help with mathematics, data analysis and problem solving. This course satisfies medical school and engineering requirements for an introductory physics I course with labs.

Groups, Rings and Fields

A brief consideration of properties of sets, mappings, and the system of integers, followed by an introduction to the theory of groups and rings including the principal theorems on homomorphisms and the related quotient structures; integral domains, fields, polynomial rings. Four class hours per week.

Requisite: MATH 211 and either MATH 271 or 272, or consent of the instructor. Students with a grade of B+ or lower in linear algebra are encouraged to take another 200-level course with proofs before taking MATH 350.

Developmental Psychology

(Offered as PSYC 227 and EDST 227) A study of human development across the lifespan with an emphasis on the general characteristics of various stages of development from birth to adolescence and on the determinants of the developmental process. The class will explore: 1) prenatal development, 2) the development of motor skills, cognitive skills, language, emotional understanding, attachments, and morality, and 3) the role of family systems in development. Students will engage with this content using contemporary research and real-world applications.   

Action and Character

A first college-level course in the fundamentals of acting, with an emphasis on the connections between dramatic action and character. Students learn how to analyze dramatic texts and bring them to life through a collaborative process, and by using body, voice and imagination. Classwork includes regular exercises designed to develop acting craft. Homework includes memorization, regular rehearsals and relevant reading, alongside practical research and short writing in various modes. Assignments progress toward realizing performed scenes.
