Methods of Literary Study

This course teaches the skills that enable us to read literature with understanding and pleasure. By studying examples from a variety of periods and places, students learn how poetry, prose fiction and drama work, how to interpret them and how to make use of interpretations by others. English 199 seeks to produce perceptive readers well equipped to take on complex texts. This gateway course for prospective English majors is not recommended for students simply seeking a writing intensive course. Readings in different sections vary, but all involve active discussion and frequent writing.

Political Anthr Middle East

This seminar focuses on anthropological studies of how power - both in its open and hidden forms - manifests itself and shapes everyday life in the contemporary Middle East. It explores how authority is established and contested in various domains including bureaucracy and the state; sexuality and the family; religion and civil society; markets and the media. We will trace how experiences of colonization, imperialism, modernization, nationalism, capitalism, occupation, war and revolt mold the conditions of living for peoples of the Middle East.

We often imagine race and religion as two distinct aspects of social life. However, this course considers their historical and contemporary interconnections in Latin America. It begins with an investigation of the proto-racial and religious categories through which Europeans in the early modern era conceived of human difference. We then trace how the encounter between Europeans, Africans, and Indigenous Peoples transformed these notions, with particular attention to how the overlapping racial and religious hierarchies that emerged were both constructed and resisted.

There's a low buzz; we feel nervous. Is this capitalism's end? Have zombies hit the horizon yet? Keep checking. Anthropology narrates collective feeling, gives form to the ambience. But what is late industrialism's ambience? As factory buildings crumble, we wonder whether the tap water's clean. The question of how to write the world is also a question of how to survive and even flourish.

Drawing II: Deep Looking

In this course we will take a deep dive into visual perception through the medium of drawing. Geared toward students who took 100-level studio courses remotely, this course will take the practice of observational drawing to the next level, emphasizing engagement in embodied time, space, and community. Using traditional and non-traditional materials and subject matter, we'll delve into the poetics and politics of perception and observation, exploring space, surface, structure, light, and more. This physically engaged course will center mindfulness and hands-on, materially-based methodologies.

Generative Painting

Generative Painting will explore painting as an iterative process of discovery and investigation. Students will be introduced to a wide range of traditional and non-traditional applications of materials through assignments and demonstrations, which together will serve as a foundation for a longer-term independent project. Assignments will explore both observational and non-representational painting and will involve working primarily with water-based media on a variety of surfaces including paper, canvas, and wood.
