From the absorbing tales of the One Thousand and One Nights and the haunting melancholy of pre-Islamic poetry to the inimitable beauty of the Quran, Medieval Arabic literature is fascinating and inexhaustible. Via English translations, this course introduces students to a rich diversity of Arabic literary texts written from the sixth century to the dawn of the modern period, stretching from the cosmopolitan cities of Muslim Spain to the empires of Central Asia and beyond.

This course is for students enrolled in History 491J (History of Modern China). Students enrolled in this class will do more of the readings and assignments that the graduate students are completing, making it possible for them to participate as fuller members of this advanced history seminar.

Colonial American preconditions, origins of the Revolution, controversies leading to independence, the role of individuals, war period, structuring new governments and society, problems of the nation to 1789. Social, political, intellectual issues, and new interpretations stressed. Previous American history survey course desirable.
