This is an introductory course in the field of language planning and policy which is situated in the broader field of sociology of language. Selected case studies in education will provide a basis for critically examining issues such as: ideology and language planning interface, language education policies, literacy movements, and language shift and death. Research methodology and curriculum development projects will be designed.

This course aims to prepare ELL and mainstream teachers to address the challenge of helping bilingual and emergent bilingual learners succeed in regular academic content classes. We will consider research supporting the view that second language acquisition is enhanced by rigorous academic content instruction.

FYS-Social Media/Changes Us

Through this course, students will explore different types of social media and our relationships to them. We will discuss the origins of these platforms and different theorists that have written about them. Through experiential activities, we will use critical thinking to dive deep into the ways these platforms have influenced ourselves, our politics and the ways we see the world.
