In this course, students will have a chance to reflect on their own life goals and aspirations, as well as those of others, and consider the role of gender, economic class, race, and culture in shaping these. Topics may include how social forces influence our desired careers and family life, and our visions for an ideal society.

Protests by professional and amateur athletes against racial and gender discrimination are not new or isolated events in U.S. history. In fact, sports have long been connected to the social, economic, and political issues of the day. With a particular focus on labor and civil rights struggle, our goal is to better understand the history of sports as it relates to social class, race, and gender. Students will analyze current controversies through this critical approach to sports and society.

Examines how globalization impacts gender relations, as well as how beliefs about femininity and masculinity influence globalization. Focuses on particularly important contexts, including: global production, international debt, migration, sex, tourism and war.

This course explores the relationship between people and their environments, examining how environmental issues are constructed and contested through the lens of social justice. This class is divided into three major topic areas through which to understand environmental justice: food, waste, and "natural" disasters. (Gen. Ed. SB, DU)

In this honors colloquium, in addition to the requirements of the base course, students will need to complete additional work, research, and/or writing as directed by the instructor. Students will perform analysis of some type of data related to the course, and will learn how to create an annotated bibliography or literature review. Additionally, they will display their findings in either a paper or a presentation. Students will learn more in-depth how Sociologists do their research, how to locate and identify peer-reviewed academic work, and to explore a topic of interest to them.
