This course investigates the language used in advertisements. Advertisements are designed to persuade us to do things. Our focus will be on how advertisers use language to convey meanings, how they appeal to our emotions and elicit humor. We will examine concrete examples and use basic concepts from linguistic theory to understand the properties of persuasive language and the kinds of meanings that are at play.

How the built environment is shaped by humans. The forces that go into developing human settlements, how these environments change, how different groups experience the environment, and how environmental designers work within this context. (Gen.Ed. I)

The relationships among reporters, publishers, and politicians, and how each uses the media. Using historical biographies and other texts, the class will examine past strategies by politicians and media figures. Topics include campaign strategies, Washington politics, day-to-day effectiveness in office, making arguments through the media, and how those not elected use the media.

This course introduces core political economy concepts from both classical and modern thinkers while engaging in contemporary debates about the relationship between states and markets. Students will read Smith, Marx, List, Polanyi, Keynes, Hayek, and others, as well as engage with questions such as: What is political economy? Why and how do capitalist systems differ? Why are some countries wealthier and more prosperous than others? What is the role of the state in the economy, market, and development?

An introduction to the type of legal reasoning and analysis practised in the American judicial system. Through readings of case opinions and additional materials, the course will explore how legal reasoning works within the legal system, its application to other types of law related problems, and critiques of both its theory and practice.
