S-Diversity/Inclusion/Pedagogy

This seminar will review domain literature concerning best practices in diversity, inclusion, and pedagogy, while connecting these topics to workplace and classroom experiences. Starting with core literature and examples from geosciences, geology, geography and elsewhere, students will engage in critical discussion of how race, gender, class and other identities have been marginalized in these fields. Through conversations, reflections, and participatory actions, this course will explore current issues and consider how to create an equitable landscape moving forward.

ST-Tectonophysics

A comprehensive and quantitative study of the fundamental aspects of plate tectonics. Introduction to heat flow, elasticity and flexure, fluid mechanics, faulting, gravity, and flow in porous media, with a wide range of geological applications. Includes collaborative problem solving.

Environmental Geophysics

Application of seismic, gravity, magnetic, and electrical methods used in geophysical exploration. Field techniques, data compilation, and basic interpretations used to support shallow subsurface studies and environmental or hydrologic programs. Lectures, laboratory and field problems.

Paleoclimatology

Methods used in reconstructing climate before the period of instrumental records and their application in understanding late Quaternary climatic fluctuations. Topics include dating methods, ice core studies, palynology, ocean core studies, terrestrial geological and biological studies, dendroclimatology, and historical climatology.
Prerequisites: Geo-Sci 354 or permission of instructor.
