The course surveys the historical and theoretical underpinnings of the modern international human rights regime. Students will explore the debate around universal vs. culturally determined rights, and construct an understanding of the legal structure that has developed over the past 60 years to adjudicate human rights violations. Then, drawing on human rights and sociology peer reviewed literature, human rights instruments, popular media, documentary films, biographies, and other sources the class will explore a broad range of both domestic and international human rights issues.

This course is the second part of the Beginning Korean, which is designed to teach the fundamental skills to read, write, listen and speak in elementary level Korean. Prior to take this course, students are expected to read Hangul and to be able to talk about simple daily activities and carry a limited conversation with memorized phrases. Compared to the first semester, more advanced vocabulary and grammar patterns will be introduced, and the students will learn how to integrate them into developed forms of application.

This course is the second part of the intermediate Korean, which is designed for students who have taken Intermediate Korean I or proven to be at the equivalent proficiency. This course aims at the acquisition of Korean language skills to speak, listen, read and write at the intermediate level. Students will make a paragraph level discourse, narratives and reports. In addition to the classroom instruction, there will be an hour of conversation session with the tutors, which students have to attend every week to practice speaking.

This course applies principles of continuum mechanics to a broad range of biomechanical phenomena. The topics include: introduction to cell biology, fundamentals of solid mechanics, mechanosensitive machineries in cells, mechanotransduction, cell mechanics, developmental biomechanics, etc. Experimental methods for measuring molecular mechanics, cell adhesion, migration and contraction, and tissue biomechanics will also be discussed. Most recent literature will be used as discussion materials to connect theories with research.

This course covers a quantitative description of the function and control of organ systems. Mathematical models are derived to describe physical principles and physiologic mechanisms.
