This course aims to prepare ELL and mainstream teachers to address the challenge of helping bilingual and emergent bilingual learners succeed in regular academic content classes. We will consider research supporting the view that second language acquisition is enhanced by rigorous academic content instruction.

ST-Cont Iss Cldhd Ed

The course explores the complex web of issues that children, families, and early childhood educators face in our diverse society. Issues and ideologies of race, ethnicity, class, language, literacies, and special needs emerge in pre-school and school settings that challenge our educational vision of providing equal life chances to all children. By offering the opportunity to examine issues through socio-cultural and critical lenses, the course seeks to foster construction of knowledge that will enable students to be advocates for children and families in a range of educational settings.

S-Retrieval & Review

Introductory course focusing on retrieving and reviewing educational research. Retrieval component introduces sources useful in accessing educational research (e.g., ERIC, journals, handbooks). Reading component introduces quantitative, qualitative, and critical theory modes of inquiry emphasizing how to understand and explain research.

Lang & Lit Policy and Planning

This is an introductory course in the field of language planning and policy which is situated in the broader field of sociology of language. Selected case studies in education will provide a basis for critically examining issues such as: ideology and language planning interface, language education policies, literacy movements, and language shift and death. Research methodology and curriculum development projects will be designed.
