FYS-Exploring&Identifying/Acad

This seminar is designed specifically for students entering UMass Amherst in the Interdisciplinary Exploratory Track. The seminar will assist students in making a smooth transition to college, learning about the wide array of majors, minors and certificate programs available, and determining what will be their best path forward. The curriculum covers the process of declaring a major (self-assessment, major and career exploration), as well as time management and essential skills. Students will learn how to navigate UMass requirements, opportunities, and resources.

Latinx&Latin American Poetry

This creative writing course turns to poetry and narrative that comes alive off the page. Reading work by Raquel Gutiérrez, Clarice Lispector, Jenni(f)fer Tamayo, Ricardo Bracho, and tatiana nascimento, among others, students will write and perform across genres while in dialogue with voices from across the Americas. To place ourselves in our bodies as well as our words, we will explore not just the innovative aesthetics taken up by writers of Latin American descent but also the politics activated in forms as varied as the butch memoir, the sissy play, the travel diary, and the sound poem.

Intro to Creative Writing

This course offers an introduction to the composition of multiple genres and modes of creative writing, which may include poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, hybrid forms, graphic novels, and digital texts. Students will learn strategies for generating ideas, drafting, giving and receiving feedback, revising creative work, and building literary community.

My Body, My Health

Principles of health promotion and wellness with an emphasis on helping you get the most out of your college experience. Using active, socially engaged approaches we will examine topics such as resilience and stress, social image, healthy eating, social activism, substance use, healthy relationships, and human sexuality (Gen.Ed. SI, DU).
