This is a potential honors colloquium. In addition to the requirements of the base course, students will need to complete additional work, research, and/or writing as directed by the instructor. Enrollment is only by consent of the instructor and meeting times will be arranged with the instructor. Students will perform analysis of some type of data related to the course, and will learn how to create an annotated bibliography or literature review. Additionally, students will display their findings in either a paper or a presentation.

Introduction to sociology. America's major social problems--past and present--are examined. These include crime, mental health, drug addiction, family tensions and inequalities based on race, gender, ethnicity and social class. (Gen.Ed. SB, DU)

This is a course designed to introduce the key theories at use in sociology and other related academic disciplines, with close attention paid to inequality, solidarity, individualism, bureaucracy and capitalism. The goal is to provide a theoretical web and collaborative learning experiences wherein students will be able to situate social theories and debates in relation to one another, in relation to the theories/perspectives of other disciplines, and also in relation to important issues of the day.

Learn how to turn an interesting topic into a researchable question, what the process of research and writing are like for REAL researchers, hear about how researchers solve difficult research problems, and get tips on how to conduct your own research project. This 1-credit class will help anyone who is thinking about going to grad school in Sociology, as well as anyone doing-- or thinking of doing-- a research project of their own before graduation. Required for honors seniors.

Introduction to research design in sociology. How social science data are obtained and analyzed. How data are used to describe and draw conclusions about social phenomena. Surveys, sampling, interviews, observation, and field methods.

The evolution and current status of labor and work in the U.S. Examines multiple perspectives on workers, unions, workplace systems, and worker rights.
