Seminar-Sophomore

Weekly lecture by guest scientist working in chemistry or chemically related field (research, teaching, administration, product development, sales, etc.) to help students identify their own interests as related to chemistry. May include brief reports. The student learning objectives are to (1) Identify the research foci within the department and opportunities for undergraduate research; (2) Acquire skills to write a cover letter and resume; (3) Identify internships, labs, and research opportunities appropriate to their interests; (4) Identify array of career options for chemistry majors.

This is a stand-alone independent study designed by the student and faculty sponsor that involves frequent interaction between instructor and student. Qualitative and quantitative enrichment must be evident on the proposed contract before consent is given to undertake the study.

Honors Project

Honors Project expectations are high. The intended end-product is a traditional project manuscript with accompanying artifact(s), all projects:
- are 6 credits or more of sustained research on a single topic, typically conducted over two semesters.
- begin with creative inquiry and systematic research.
- include documentation of substantive scholarly endeavor.
- culminate in an oral defense or other form of public presentation.

Organic Chem-Maj

Introduction to the structure and synthesis of organic molecules, the reactions of the principal functional groups, and the basic theory of organic chemistry. The prediction of reaction products using reaction mechanisms, and the determination of organic structure using spectroscopy. The underlying role of stereochemistry in organic structure and reactions will be emphasized.
