ST-Turkish Speakers I

Mentored Turkish for Turkish Speakers I is part of the Mentored Language Program administered by the Five College Center for World Languages. The course is designed for students who already have advanced proficiency in spoken Turkish, but want to learn to read and write in the language. The course format combines independent study with weekly individual tutorials with a Turkish language mentor. Students are required to complete a set amount of material during the semester and complete mid-term and final examinations graded by an outside evaluator.

Practicum

ST-Manuscript Japanese

Designed as a critical supplement to the study of bungotai, this course introduces the script forms and orthography that most Japanese texts - whether manuscript, woodblock printed, or moveable type - used prior to the twentieth century. Students will become familiar with the basic elements of that script system, from derivation and method to deciphering letters (first semester) and reading complete texts (subsequent semesters).

ST-Imperial America:1848-Now

This graduate seminar explores the expansion and assertion of American imperial power from the US-Mexican War to the "global war on terror." Students will be introduced to the widest possible conception of US "foreign relations" by evaluating the cultural, economic, political, and strategic factors that shaped American policy and by analyzing the lived experience of empire building and anti-imperial resistance at home and abroad.
