Topics course: This course will examine the vibrant music, singing traditions, and cultural history of the American shape-note tunebook The Sacred Harp. First published in Georgia in 1844, the book is significant as both a repository of early American vernacular hymnody and as the focus of a continuing musical tradition. We will examine the ideas that shaped it, its early history in the primarily rural South, and the “pre-history” of shape-note music in Northampton. Assignments will be supplemented with group singing and archival research on local music history.

What is philosophy for? What creative forms might our philosophical practices take in the 21st century? We will explore how a philosophical education might help us navigate our natural, cultural, social and psychological worlds and their intersections, which, in turn, shape our complex identities as individual and determine our humanity.

Topics course: Humans have always sought to elevate the conditions of their existence. What differentiates enhancement’s strongest proponents, so-called transhumanists, from earlier thinkers like the ancient Greeks is their belief that crossing the divide from our plane of being to a higher one is possible, even inevitable, through humans’ technological ingenuity. Given their content and implications, scrutiny of transhumanists’ views is essential.
