ST-Intro/MEMS & Microsciences

Introduction to general manufacturing methods for Micro Electromechanical Systems (MEMS) with emphasis on concepts, physics, and instruments of various micro/nano-fabrication techniques that have been widely used in industry and academia. Topics include: 1. MEMS fabrication: lithography technologies, physical and chemical deposition methods, and physical and chemical etching methods, process integration, etc. 2. MEMS physics: Scaling laws, material properties, forces, microfluidics, interfacial phenomenon, etc.; 3.

S-Seminar in Asset Pricing

In this course we'll see models of asset prices that try to explain observed features of asset prices using macroeconomic quantities. The goal is to discuss plausible microfounded models whose asset pricing predictions match empirical facts. We will go through the details of the models, trying to understand why they were constructed the way they are, and also work on linking models and data. We'll also discuss recent advances in asset pricing and their implications for future research.

American Courtroom Dramas

This course treats America's obsession with courtroom drama (real and fictional) as a window onto American culture. We will examine courtroom drama as a recurring trope in American literature, film, and television, and as a reflection of our expectations about what justice should look like. We will explore how real-life trials such as The Scopes Monkey Trial, The Scottsboro Case, The People vs. OJ Simpson, and the recent trial of George Zimmerman became focal points of public fascination and outrage.

ST-Jules Verne/FrenchSteampunk

Course taught in French. In this class we will explore worlds filled with sea-world mechanics linked to the magic of electricity, mysterious gear-filled machines that go under water and in the sky, and steam-powered engines. What are these fictional worlds? They are instances of steampunk, a subgenre of science fiction and fantasy, in which the old and new, the real and the imaginary, technology and at times the supernatural mix together to create fascinating fictional worlds that allow us to explore essential questions concerning our own world and ourselves.
