Acquisition of basic competence in Japanese in the areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Part 2 of a two part course. Prerequisite is Japanese 120 or Japanese 126 or permission of the instructor.
This is a stand-alone independent study designed by the student and faculty sponsor that involves frequent interaction between instructor and student. Qualitative and quantitative enrichment must be evident on the proposed contract before consent is given to undertake the study.
Japan has become a phenomenally successful exporter of pop culture. One face of this is Manga (graphic novels) and Anime (Japanese animations). This course will give students tools to understand Manga and Anime. We will investigate the role Manga and Anime play in Japan; we will track how the different industries shape narratives in different ways; we will examine ways that Manga and Anime flow from one place to another. Students will read in English translation the supreme masterpiece of Japanese literature, The Tale of Genji (ca. 1010), which is also the world's first novel and the only world classic written by a woman. We'll also read The Tale of the Heike, a warrior epic inspired by the political intrigues and the horrors of the Genpei War (1180-1185). No prerequisites. (Gen.Ed. AL, DG)
