FYS- Flavor Your World

Ever wonder how the Science of Food impacts your eating choices? Have a friend - or are the one - that hates cilantro? This is the world of Sensory Science, where we will study the relationship between your five senses and their influence on everyday food choices. Prepare your eyes, ears, tongue and mind: we'll challenge your sensory perception! (Please note: This is not a cooking class.)

FYS-Making Decisions

What guides the way we make decisions? Do we have a way to study them? We will explore these, and other questions related to the challenges we face when making choices. We will aim to understand the different mechanisms involved in these, using hands on activities and popular culture examples, learning how to use them to your advantage to build your own nation (or at least learn how to use them during college).

FYS- Food and Health

Hey, what did you eat for lunch today? Sandwich, pizza or salad? Have you ever wondered whether your everyday meal is really healthy or just sounds healthy? Have you ever purchased food because of the fancy health claims on its labels but never think about whether it?s indeed good for you? Have you ever doubted whether your supplements really work or are just placebos? Have you ever been overwhelmed by food news or articles but failed to differentiate with the truth and rumors?

FYS- Molecular Metropolis

This seminar will introduce a metaphorical scene where a human cell is scaled to the size of a campus. The class will feature a 10 to the 8th magnified cell, overlaid on UMass campus, in order to have an approachable and immersive view of a cell's layout and behaviors. From this viewpoint, comparison between cell and campus will show us similarities in organization and structures, movements of information and materials, and an overarching themes of modularity.

FYS- Math of Fantasy Football

What is the best way to set my lineup? How does the history of a player impact their performance in their next game? Is it better to accept this trade or decline it based on the players on my roster? How can I make roster decisions from a mathematical standpoint? We will discuss methods to evaluate decisions in order to make the best choice and how the best option may change under different circumstances. The concepts learned in this course will extend far beyond fantasy football, but this will provide us with a hands-on, approachable, and fun example to apply these ideas.
