S-Physiology/Next Superhero

Can we become superheroes by improving our bodily functions? In order to develop tools for the improvement of the human body, we need to understand its basic biology. In this course, we will look at the way the human body works by applying scientific literature to create your own imaginary superhero. We will discuss different topics about the human body, while also using the knowledge and inspiration we got from animals. With your imagination and science combined, you will create the next superhero.

FYS- This Class is Going Viral

There are more than 200, 000 species of viruses that are unknown to us. How often do you come down with a nasty cold? What causes viruses to wreak havoc in an organism that is many orders of magnitude bigger than itself? Are viruses alive? Are viruses good or bad? This seminar will explore what viruses are and how they play an important role in human health (good/bad). We will address these questions and discuss how viruses are grown and studied in the lab. Additionally, the course will include visits to some labs at UMass that do exciting virus research.

FYS - First Year Seminar

This course is designed to welcome first years in to the major and inform them of opportunities for their advancement in the department and beyond. The course introduces students to the subject area clusters of courses offered in the major and the faculty members in the department who teach in each of the clusters. It provides a brief overview of the field of political science and the major issues and topics that motivate the inquiries conducted in courses and in research.

FYS- Biological Super Villains

What are invasive species, how do they get here, and what can we do to stop them? We will explore these questions (and more!) as we learn about the plants, animals, and pathogens that spread rapidly through our ecosystems. We will also learn how to turn our curiosities into questions, and how to come up with ways to limit the damage caused by invasive species. Join me for a semester of crazy case studies, interactive activities, and info that will help you navigate the sciences here at UMass!

FYS - SBS Pathways/College

There is more than one way to find success in college and the path to getting there is different for every student. This class will help incoming students define their individual goals and connect them to the resources needed to achieve these goals. Through activities and exercises students will discover the many academic and co-curricular activities available at UMass and begin creating their own roadmap to graduation.
